The ancient pseudo-science of palmistry recognizes four characteristic hand shapes corresponding to the Greek elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire.

The ancient practice of palm reading is said to originate in Hindu astrology and Roma (gypsy) divination. Modern palm readers may claim to be able to predict the future or identify key struggles in a person's life by looking at the palm of the dominant hand…beginning with the characteristics described in the hand's shape.

Palmistry and the Four Hand Types

One of the first steps in reading a palm is determining the shape or character of the hand. Hand types may be divided into as many as ten types, but most palm readers use four: Earth, Air, Water and Fire.

Earth Hand

An earth hand is composed of a square hand with short fingers about the same length as the palm.

Short fingers indicate a quick temperament that likes to explore different challenges in life but may have little patience.

Earth types usually have few lines on the hand, but those lines are deep. Earth types are calm, practical, steady, reliable. They like to be busy and productive, and their hands can often "think for themselves." Pushed to their limits, earth types can be very stubborn (likes those deep lines in their hands), and that reserved manner may turn explosive.

Air Hand

An air hand has a square palm and long fingers.

Long fingers show a person who enjoys complicated work and fiddling with details. Simple or shallow work bores this kind of person quickly, and they can be very patient.

The air hand personality is creative, practical and pensive. This kind of person may be in the habit of doing things with his mind, but also possesses good intuition. The air type usually has a curious nature and enjoys travel, communication, strange experiences and learning new things. The emphasis here is on mental logic and communication.

Water Hand

A water hand can be recognized by an oblong palm (longer than it is wide) and long fingers. See "Air Hand" for the meaning of long fingers.

A person with a characteristic water hand will be very creative, but not always very practical. Water types are extremely sensitive and intuitive, indicated by the oblong hand. They are also idealistic, loving, emotional and changeable, with a strong aesthetic sense. They often give a (false) outward appearance of calm.

Fire Hand

A fire hand has an oblong palm and fingers significantly shorter than the palm. See "Earth Hand" for a definition of short fingers.

The fire type is outgoing, enthusiastic and creative. People with fire hands are often impulsive, curious, and eager to start projects but not as good at finishing them. They can be a pleasure to be around but may also be changeable and impatient. The fire type is intuitive, generous and sociable but bores easily.

Whether or not palmistry is an accurate predictor of the future, the character described in a person's hand can be a lot of fun and an interesting way to learn about oneself and others.
